Experience traditional and industrial sewing machines and CNC Embroidery.

Join Becky and Rob in a hands-on, four-part series designed to introduce you to the most popular textiles tools in the craft shop. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn new skills or an experienced textiles guru seeking access to these tools, this series offers something for everyone.

Each session of this workshop will provide:

  1. An explanation of the tools and their common uses.

  2. Hands-on instruction on how to safely operate each machine.

  3. Instruction on how the day’s learnings can be applied towards your classic canvas zipper bag.

Enjoy a calm, focused learning environment in our well-equipped textiles shop. Attendees of this class will have membership thru the course of the class, and you will end the course with a completed bag!

Have extra time between classes? Use your membership to come in each week to get additional experience and make optional (no extra cost) customizations to your bag. You are also welcome to use your membership to work on additional projects! Membership gives you access to a LOT more than just the textiles area - just ask staff!

  • Access to the shop beyond the class via a month-long membership, enabling you to continue practicing, or start a project!

  • Intended for beginners, project-oriented learners, and experienced textiles artists needing access to tools.

By the end of this track you’ll have made a classic zippered canvas bag, be checked out to use both traditional and industrial sewing machines along with CNC Embroidery equipment. You will be well equipped to apply this knowledge to a variety of future projects!

Who will your instructors be?

Instructors
Becky

Becky runs a business designing and selling quilts, supports other quilters with her knowledge, and has taught hundreds of people how to sew. She's always excited to meet and help others expand their knowledge in textiles!

Rob

Rob is a professional maker and helps teach and maintain the Amaya Embroidery equipment at Maker Works. He’s comfortable operating most of the tools throughout Maker Works, and helps run a local embroidery business.

Session 1: sewing machine basics

  • Bernina Activa Sewing Machine: Ideal for creating precise garment makers and crafters.

  • Key Concepts: Safety, machine parts and functions, threading, winding, tension, needles, and stitches.

  • Project Discussion: Overview of zippered canvas bag, the materials, and assembly process.

Session 2: Consew Industrial Sewing Machine

  • Consew Industrial Sewing Machine: A heavy duty sewing machine perfect for sewing through multiple thick layers of denim, leather, etc.

  • Key Concepts: Same as the Bernina, more emphasis on safety

  • Project Discussion: Using the Consew to augment your bag’s strap between now and the next session.

Session 3: Amaya cnc embroidery machine

  • Amaya CNC Embroidery: Ideal for monogramming shirts or towels, decorating bags, and making patches.

  • Design Shop: Professional standard for importing or creating (digitizing) your own graphics to embroider.

  • Key Concepts: Safety, software process, tool setup and operation, hooping strategies.

  • Project Discussion: Using the Amaya to embroider your canvas bag between now and the next session.

Session 4: Zippered Canvas Bag!

  • Key Concepts: Applying your previous knowledge and work to assemble your zippered canvas bag!

  • Project Discussion: Putting it all together. Q&A about personal projects, tricks, and recommendations!
