Join Marty, Nova and Pam in a hands-on, four-part series designed to introduce you to the most popular tool at Maker Works - The Epilog Helix Laser Engraver. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn new skills or just looking to expand your laser cutting skill set, this series offers something for everyone.

Each session will introduce a new capability of the laser engraver through hands-on instruction.

This series includes a membership at Maker Works, and the very first session gets you checked out to safely use the Laser Cutter. This means you’ll be able to come in outside of the class to continue learning and making on your own! And don’t worry, the shop staff are always there to help make sure you’re safe and answer basic questions.

Who will your instructors be?

Instructors
Marty

Marty Hedler is a long-time member and Guest Instructor at Maker Works. You’ll often find him prototyping and building museum exhibits, consulting with members, maintaining equipment, and teaching everything from Inkscape and Intro to CNC to Fusion 360. Marty will be teaching the Inkscape class.

Nova

Nova has a background in computer engineering, graphic design, and web development, and is one of the top rated instructors at Maker Works. She teaches several classes, from the giant 4' x 8' ShopBot CNC Router to the Epilog Helix Laser Engravers.

Pam

We're fortunate to work with Pam Lindberg as a Guest Instructor! Her experience combines a lifelong hobby as a photographer, over two decades with a book manufacturer, and most recently as a puzzle enthusiast turned puzzle maker. Check out her business “Creative Corners”.

What can you expect with each session?

  • Review of our Principles of Safety so everyone is safe and welcome using the tools at our shop.

  • The feeling of confidence learning from expert instructors to safely operate a new tool!

  • A connection with a community of makers through these shared experiences.

  • Access to the shop beyond the class via a month-long membership, enabling you to continue practicing, or start a project!

By the end of the track, you’ll be checked out on the laser, and have basic knowledge in cutting, engraving, the rotary tool, and masking!

Join us and gain the confidence to use these powerful tools safely and effectively!

Session 1: INKSCAPE WITH MARTY AND NOVA

  • Inkscape: Excellent illustration software perfect for making laser compatible designs..

  • Key Concepts: General interface, views, object creation/selection/manipulation, saving.

  • Takeaway: Knowledge to start editing or creating designs for laser engraving or cutting.

Session 2: laser checkout with nova

  • Epilog Laser: Excellent for quickly and efficiently engraving on or cutting through a variety of materials.

  • Key Concepts: Safety, tool setup and operation, basic techniques for engraving and cutting.

  • Takeaway: Our classic Maker Works 5” custom engraved ruler, access to the laser cutter!

Session 3: Rotary tool glass engraving with nova

  • Rotary Tool: Makes it easy to engrave on cylindrical objects like glasses and travel mugs.

  • Media Blaster: A sand blaster that combined with a laser cutter lets us put a silky finish on a glass.

  • Key Concepts: Safety, tool setup, artwork prep, and work-holding strategies.

  • Takeaway: Custom laser engraved tumbler drinking glass, access to the media blaster!

Session 4: laser cut custom puzzles with pam

  • Masking: Lets us protect photos and other material we we cut through with the laser.

  • Key Concepts: Safety, tool setup and operation, work-holding strategies, feeds and speeds.

  • Takeaway: Custom laser cut puzzle (bring your own photo or image, or choose from a selection).
