What is laser engraving/cutting?
Laser engraving is a process that vaporizes materials to engrave permanent marks of varying depth. The laser beam acts as a chisel, etching designs by removing layers from the material — unlike a chisel, you vaporize instead of physically displace. At a high enough power, the beam can cut through the material as well (more cleanly and precisely than a knife)!

This class will introduce you to the Epilog 50watt Laser Cutter/Engraver. Learn how to cut and engrave lots of different materials such as paper, fabric, plastics, wood and more! The Epilog Laser can handle many different file formats such as pdf, Adobe illustrator and photoshop, jpgs, dwg, dxf, eps and more. You will learn basic operation of this tool with an emphasis on safety. With the successful completion of this class you will be certified to use the Epilog Laser Cutter/Engraver on your own. Please note: You can create designs for the laser using vector design software, such as Inkscape, which is free and open source. If you’re not familiar with vector design, you might consider taking our Inkscape 101 and Inkscape 102 classes.
People under age 16 may take this tool checkout class with their parent/guardian (both adult and minor must register and pay.) A parent/guardian who has taken the checkout class must also accompany them when operating the tool. Ages 16 and up are encouraged to take checkout classes in any area they wish, with parent/guardian approval.
