Over the next few weeks we’ll be featuring some of the wonderful makers who make our community great. Today we’re highlighting Kelly, a total powerhouse in the metal shop. You might find her making sparks on the plasma cutter, bending sheet metal and rods into gorgeous curves on the slip roller, welding up a storm, or powder coating pieces in a vibrant array of colors. Read on to learn more about how she got to where she is today, and check back next week for another featured maker!

What can you tell us about your art and areas of interest in making?
I was thrust into my metal sculpture career when my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. My Dad has always been a major influence in my life. You would describe him as a “renaissance” man. He was always exploring new creative expressions from photography to candle making. He found his true calling as a potter. I always followed his lead, enjoying the journey and camaraderie. His death started my artistic journey - first making mixed media creations with his pottery and enhancing them with metal receptacles. I wanted to pursue a new perspective to honor my dad’s art. I believe the expected presentation of a ceramic vessel limited its expression and uniqueness. This led to my exploration of metal form as its own artistic expression.
Recently, I have been exploring the manipulation of metal using fabrication machinery; specifically, the bending and cutting of metal to form a more fluid and unique sculpture. Each shape contributes to the final form. The exploration of the positive and negative space, the composition and three-dimensional process results in something unique that usually surprises me. Also, I am exploring better integration of my ceramic, glass and steel pieces, building each piece with the other in mind.
What is your relationship to Maker Works and how did you get involved with the shop?
The shop provides the fabrication tools that I could not afford to purchase nor have the space to own. I have a welder at home, but I use the shop for all fabrication and finishing.
How has Maker Works, access to shared tools, and a shared community impacted you and helped you reach your goals?
The best part of Marker Works is having a knowledgeable, helpful staff. Especially when the equipment is acting up. Between Josh, Al and Eric, there is nothing they can't repair. I am also a novice at creating computer designs, so the team is always willing to pitch in to help.
What would you say to others about your experiences with Maker Works and why is it a valuable part of the community?
Maker Works is welcoming and supportive. They are always making improvements and are interested in the needs of the members. I love talking to the other members to learn about their projects.
