September and October Workshops
Maker Works' September and October calendar has filled up fast with workshops for adults and kids. In October, Halloween-themed projects are sure to get you in the spirit of the holiday! Our Guest Instructors are experts in their fields and a lot of fun. You do not have to be a member in order to take any class or workshop at Maker Works! These are just a few workshops offered, so make sure you periodically check our Class Calendar for added workshops.
Hand Applique Workshop featuring Deb Grifka: Sept 13 & 20, 6-9pm
The next modern quilting handwork obsession is hand applique! In this 2-week workshop, award-winning quilter and Moda 'Bakeshop' instructor Deb Grifka will teach you to applique some basic shapes and make a cute owl pillow. Learn about needles, threads, thimbles, fabrics, preparing your pieces and how to do needle-turned hand applique. You'll fall in love with the simplicity of this technique and never be without a portable hand project again! This 2-week workshop also meets on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 6-9pm. Intro to Sewing featuring Becky Grover: Sept 16, 23, 30 & Oct. 7, 2-4pm
This class is meant for beginner sewers. Guest Instructor Becky Grover will walk you through the basics of using your sewing machine. Topics include sewing techniques, reading a pattern, thread and needle size, and selecting fabrics appropriate for projects. This class will help you gain confidence in sewing with various types of stitches. And you will create multiple projects! Bring your own machine or learn on one of ours. This 4-week class meets every Sunday from 2-4pm through Oct. 7. Fabric list will be given at first class. Some materials included in fee. $100
Halloween Pattern Assistance Workshop featuring Becky Grover: Oct. 6 &13, 10am-12pm
Want to sew your Halloween costume but are nervous about using a store-bought pattern? Never fear! This 2-week workshop will assuage your sewing jitters as Guest Instructor Becky Grover walks you through the process of sewing your costume! You will learn how to adjust the pattern to you or your child’s proportions as well as cutting and assembly your fabric. Bring your own sewing machine or use a Maker Works machine. This workshop meets again on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10am-12pm. You supply your own pattern, fabric, thread and sewing machine. Maker Works has 3 sewing machines that you can use as well as rotary cutters, scissors, rulers, large cutting table and plenty of work tables. $50
Secrets of Fine Leather… revealed! featuring Andy Tanguay: Oct. 8 & 15, 6-9pm
Learn the secrets of creating fine leather work using some traditional techniques and the Epilog 50w Laser Cutter! This isn't your 6th grade craft wallets- the techniques we will learn produce fine leather goods that rival commercially made items. In this class you will have the choice between two leather projects that you will then be able to take with you, along with some basic leather working items. Taught by Guest Instructor Andy Tanguay, this 2-week workshop meets again on Monday, Oct. 15 from 7-9pm.

- choosing and planning a design
- using digital tools to create your design
- devising a laser cutting strategy
- cutting leather with the Epilog Laser Cutter
- creating leatherworking 'helpers' or jigs with the Epilog laser cutter
- Water forming
- the (nearly) indestructible saddle stitch
- leatherworking resources

Using Fusibles in Quilts featuring Becky Grover: Oct. 10 & 17, 6-9pm
Learn how to use fusible to help create art quilts and hybrids of more traditional quilts. Guest Instructor Becky Grover will walk you through the technique, offering helpful tips along the way so as to make the best use of your designs. The techniques learned are like painting with fabrics and thread. This workshop meets again on Oct. 17. Workshop includes fusible webbing and tools such as rotary cutters and rulers. Roland Vinyl Cutter Halloween Workshop: Oct. 11 & 18, 7-8:30pm
The Roland Vinyl Cutter can cut sign and fabric vinyl and is easy to use. The advantage of this machine in October is that you can use it to make fast adornments to your Halloween costume! Add things such as stripes, numbers, names, polka dots without the use of a sewing machine! Fabric and sign vinyl comes in many different colors. This 2-week workshop will walk you through the steps of using the Cut Studio design software that can import many different types of files, the Roland Vinyl Cutter, and Maker Works' 2 heat presses. In the 2nd week of the workshop, bring in your computer design files, costumes and accessories. $40
LED Halloween Accessories Workshop: Oct. 13, 1-4pm
This year why not add a little light to your Halloween costume and accessories! In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to use conductive thread, simple power supplies and LEDS to add glowing bling to your Halloween costume and accessories! Great for ages 10 years and up. You bring your costumes and accessories such as swords, tiaras, masks, gloves, leggings and hats. Kit included with class fee and extra kit supplies available for purchase. $30.
Bias Applique featuring Deb Grifka: Oct. 16 & 23, 6-9pm
Learn how to make your own bias strips and what to do with them! This 2-week workshop features Guest Instructor and award-winning modern quilter Deb Grifka of Esch House Quilts. You'll love making fun curves and shapes for a unique quilt. It's almost like drawing with fabric! There will be 2 patterns from which to choose: A cute coffee mug design or a flower petal pattern. Costume-Making Extravaganza: Oct. 20, 1-4pm
This year, leave your basement, garage, living room or wherever you are assembling your Halloween costume, call your friends and come to Maker Works! This 3-hour costume-making workshop gains you access to Maker Works’ sewing machines, tool crib, large project work tables, the large fabric cutting table, vacuum former, and scraps of wood and laser cut pieces. Lots of stuff to give you and your friends fabulous results! This is a party atmosphere, so get ready to have some fun with others! $15
LED Trick-or-Treat Bag Workshop: October 21, 1-4pm
Want to have a super far-out LED light up trick-or-treat bag this year? Sure, who doesn’t? Want to learn how to make one yourself? Join us for this 3-hour workshop to create your very own bag using conductive thread and LEDs. Great for ages 6 years and up! Kit included in class fee and additional kit materials available for purchase. $15
