Guest Instructor summer workshops
Maker Works has a bunch of 1-day, 4-week and 8-week Skill Development Classes taught by amazing Guest Instructors this summer. These classes feature the Wood studio and the Craft studio. A few of them are great for kids ages 12 years and up! And you don't have to be a member to take the classes! Stay tuned for more project-based classes to be added as the summer goes along such as mosaic workshops and glass bead-making workshops.
Wood Studio:
Shrines and Reliqueries: Looking for objects of more significance in your life? Or have them and want to display them in a more meaningful way? Brendnt Rae will walk you through this 8-week class, exploring pairing objects of interest or special significance with purpose built vessels. Additive and subtractive methods will be explored as well as using the bandsaw for quick sculpting, routing, jig-making and more. Conversation will focus on creativity and ways of presenting objects of importance in our lives. This class meets every Tuesday from 5:30-9:30 starting June 19 - August 14: 8-week long class
Painted on Mustache: Have you ever wanted to make something for your home or apartment but realized that it would cost an arm or leg? This 8-week class is taught by woodworking extraordinaire Brendnt Rae. He will teach you tricks to dress up your surroundings using minimal luxury materials for maximum effect! Such as using a Home Depot balloon door as a base for a fancy frame and panel door or found object mantels and sills. This class meets every Wednesday from 5:30-9:30 starting June 20- August 15
8-week classes include 2 scheduled make-up classes for those away on vacation or are sick.
Basic Box Building and Decoration for Teens: This 5-day camp will mix power tool skills with computer skills to give you some mad woodworking skills! Get introduced to construction methods and marquetry through the use of the Epilog Laser Cutter and woodworking tools! You will work alongside Brendnt Rae to design and create personalized boxes utilizing woodworking skills such as mitering and veneering, and design tools such as Corel Draw software. And you will learn how to operate a laser cutter! Great for ages 13 years and up. This camp runs Monday-Friday, August 6-11, from 9am-4pm.
Craft Studio
How to Use a Pattern Workshop: Do you get frustrated by always having to adjust a pattern to fit your body type and it never works out? Does working with patterns intimidate you because of all the lines and terminology that no one explains? Join nationally known pattern designer and published author, Karen LePage, in this 2-hour workshop! Karen will teach you how to read different types of patterns and to make adjustments based on your body type and size. Bring a pattern to learn and also learn from the various patterns Karen will provide! This class meets on Wednesday, June 13 from 7-9pm
Hand Sewn Accessories with Karen LePage: Spend a Sunday afternoon learning hand sewing with Karen LePage! This 3-hour workshop will present how to embellish accessories using techniques similar in style to those by Alabama Chanin and other high-end designers. Karen will teach you various hand stitching and applique techniques as well as how to add sequins. Leave the class with a whole packet of samplers as well as finished pieces. How cool is that! This workshop meets Sunday, June 24 from 1-4pm.
5-Day of Sewing- Kids Sewing Camp: This girls and boys sewing camp is great for ages 11 years and up! Guest Instructor and avid sewer and quilter, Becky Grover, will show you how fun it is to make your own items! By completing multiple projects- pajama pants, fabric boxes and a bag- you will get the hang of reading a pattern, cutting fabric, using a variety of stitches and more! This camp meets Monday-Friday, July 16-20 from 10am-12pm.
Intro to Quilting: Join award-winning quilter Becky Grover in this 4-week beginner class. Learn how to sew a crib size 9-patch quilt using strip-piecing technique! This is a common and time effective technique used in a variety of quilt designs and styles. This class is great for confident beginner sewers and up, and those who are interested in learning this historic tradition. This 4-week class meets every Tuesday starting July 17- August 7 from 7-9pm.
First Date with your Sewing Machine: Have you been avoiding your sewing machine? Too busy? Or do you have those first date jitters because you just bought your machine? Well, dust off your thread, put on some lipstick and bring your 'date' (aka sewing machine) in for a refresher! Taught by Karen LePage, this semi-private lesson will walk you through the basics of how your machine works: Threading the machine, adjusting thread tension and other technical questions. No matter what type of machine you have, Karen can assist you in relearning all of its intricacies and quirks! This 2-hour workshop meets on Sunday, August 5 from 1-3pm.

Payment is done on the first day of class or on workshop day. Like all Maker Works classes, you do not have to be a Maker Works member to take these classes and workshops! We also offer payment options for the 8-week classes.
